non-owner car Insurance
While there's no specific product called ‘non-owner car insurance’ in the UK, we're using this term to describe getting insurance for a car you drive but don’t legally own or appear as the registered keeper for. By letting your insurer know that you’re neither the owner nor the registered keeper, you can still arrange a suitable car insurance policy that provides the protection you need.
CAN I INSURE A CAR I DON'T OWN?
Yes, you can insure a car you don’t own with non-owner car insurance. You just need to declare when you get your car insurance quote that you’re neither:
- The car’s registered keeper – that is, the person listed on the registration certificate
- The car’s owner – that is, the person who originally bought the car
You may also have to demonstrate to the insurer that you have the owner’s permission to drive the car.
WHO NEEDS NON-OWNER CAR INSURANCE?
Non-owner car insurance can be useful in a range of situations:
- For driving cars that belong to friends or relatives.
- For small businesses, where multiple employees may have to drive the same car.
- For company car arrangements.
- To cover a car that’s leased in your name, but which you don’t technically own outright.
WHAT DOES NON-OWNER CAR INSURANCE COVER?
Non-owner car insurance can give you the same level of cover that you’d get with a standard comprehensive car insurance policy.
You can also drive a car you don’t own through becoming a named driver on the owner’s insurance policy. However, in this case, the car’s owner would have to be the “main driver”. So if you intend to drive the car more often than they will, this arrangement won’t work.
A non-owner car insurance policy, though, will give you total flexibility to drive the car as often as you need to – so long as you have the owner’s permission.

how to insure a car you don't own
To take out a non-owner car insurance policy, you just need to be clear with your insurer from the start.
- You need to tell them that you wish to take out an insurance policy, and that you’re neither the car’s owner nor its registered keeper.
- You may have to prove that you have permission to drive the car
- You may have to demonstrate that you have an ‘insurable interest’. This means that you need to have a reason for wanting to drive the car you don’t own.
Your insurer might have additional requirements beyond these. As long as you make your intentions clear, and can provide evidence where required, your insurer should be able to arrange a non-owner car insurance policy for you.
