Driving down the cost of cover

It can be hard to find cheap insurance when you’re a new driver. Perhaps this is because you’re a young driver. Insurance companies rate young drivers as high risk because they’re more likely to have an accident than an older and more experienced driver.

And if you’re buying insurance for the first time you won’t have had time to build up a No Claims Discount (NCD). This is where drivers are rewarded for careful driving with lower premiums.

There are ways to reduce the cost of your new driver car insurance. Think about the type of car you drive. Cars are put into groups by insurance companies and are rated based on how much they are likely to cost to repair or replace in the event of a claim.

It is always best to park on a driveway off of the street when possible but if you have to park on the street, make sure your car is left in a well-lit area, preferably outside your home, where you can keep an eye on it. Some insurers may even ask you to install a black box in your car but don’t worry, we won’t.

As an inexperienced driver, it helps to get as much practice as you can. Taking part in the Pass Plus course after you’ve passed your driving test may help to keep the cost of your insurance down. Knowing the difference between comprehensive and third party insurance in essential, as you’ll need to make sure you know what’s covered. Excesses

An excess is the amount you pay if you have to make a claim. The size of the excess will depend on the type of car insured, the age and experience of the driver.

As well as the standard excess, drivers aged between 17 and 24 will have to pay a young driver excess. This will be based on age and the value of the car, and will be added to the standard excess in the event of a claim. Find out more about insurance excess.

If you’re taking out car insurance for the first time Go Girl will give you the peace of mind that you and your car are covered while you take to the road.
